Dos and Don'ts When Renting a Storage Unit

Do’s When Renting a Storage Unit

  • Choose the Right Size - Assess your needs to avoid overpaying for unused space or cramming items into a too-small unit. A 5x10 unit fits a small apartment; a 10x20 suits a house. Freedom Storage offers size guides so it will not be hard for you to determine which size you will need for a storage unit.

  • Inspect the Unit Before Signing - Visit the unit to check for cleanliness, dryness, and security. Ensure no signs of pests or water damage. In Freedom Storage, although it is a self-storage unit, we have our facility man who can help you anytime you need someone to be there physically and assist you.

  • Organize and Label Items - Use sturdy boxes, label everything, and stack items strategically (heavy items on the bottom). Create an aisle for easy access to items at the back.

  • Use Proper Packing Materials - Protect furniture with covers, use pallets to keep items off the floor, and wrap fragile items in bubble wrap to prevent damage.

  • Secure Your Unit - Use a high-quality disc or cylinder lock (harder to break than padlocks). Some facilities sell locks on-site, but here in Freedom Storage, we provide a high-quality and durable keycode lock that you can use during your entire stay in your unit. Just make sure to keep it in good condition so you won't have to pay nor replace the lock once you're ready to move out of the unit.

Don’ts When Renting a Storage Unit

  • Don’t Store Perishable or Hazardous Items - Avoid storing food, plants, or flammable materials (e.g., gasoline, paint thinners). These can attract pests or violate facility rules, risking eviction.

  • Don’t Overpack the Unit - Avoid cramming items to the ceiling; it increases damage risk and makes access difficult. Leave space for ventilation.

  • Don’t Ignore Payment Deadlines - Late payments can lead to fees, lockouts, or even auction of your belongings. Set up auto-pay or calendar reminders to stay on track.

  • Don’t Assume Security Is Foolproof - While facilities have cameras or guards, theft or damage can occur. Don’t store irreplaceable items (e.g., heirlooms, legal documents) without proper insurance.

  • Don’t Share Access Recklessly - Only give access codes or keys to trusted individuals. Unauthorized access could lead to theft or liability issues.

  • Don’t Forget to Document Your Items - Avoid storing items without a detailed inventory or photos. This helps with insurance claims and keeps track of what’s inside.

  • Don’t Rent Without Comparing Sizes - Prices vary widely depending on sizes. Don’t commit to the first option without making sure you have the right size for your unit.
